What is Two-Factor Authentication?
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) adds an additional layer of security for your software/website. It requires not only a password and username but also something that only the user has on them, i.e., a piece of information only they should know or have immediately to hand - such as a physical token.
Types of Two-Factor Authentication
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) enhances account security by requiring two forms of verification. Here are some common types of 2FA:
- SMS-based 2FA: This method sends a unique code to your mobile phone via text message, which you must enter along with your password.
- Authenticator Apps: Apps like Google Authenticator or Authy generate time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) on your smartphone. You enter this code to verify your identity.
- Physical Security Tokens: These are physical devices that generate a security code or could be used through NFC for authentication. Examples include YubiKey or RSA SecurID.
- Biometric Authentication: Using unique physical characteristics like fingerprint, face, or voice recognition for the second factor.
- Email-based 2FA: Similar to SMS, but the verification code is sent to your email, requiring you to have access to that email account.
- Push Notifications: Apps can send a push notification to your device asking for confirmation. You approve or deny the login attempt from your device.
